Advertising Museum Munich

operated by Michael Josef Nagl

Dahoam

A hearty welcome to Munich! You find yourself on my homepage about old advertising objects that have been gathered over many years. You encounter different materials, time spans, diverse conditions and languages. The colourful variety reflects the skills of outstanding graphic artists and artisans who on principle had to remain anonymous, as they had to devote themselves to their contractees which generally were printing offices. Let me carry you off to a time gone by in which artful details and finesse were obvious and strokes were accomplished in a sublime way.

I wish you a lot of joy diving into the world of advertising signs and posters from the past.

Museum

At the foot of the onetime Münchner Bergbräu there is a Munich quarter called Untergiesing ….

… and the private Munich Advertising Museum run by Michael Josef Nagl,

where old advertising objects are presented in five rooms of different sizes (ca. 100m2). Run privately, it does not receive any support from local or state institutions.

Born and bred (and always based) in Munich it is my intent to put my home city into the focus. My dear visitors will thus see a corner dedicated to Munich sign writers as well as a few sign from Munich wine merchants and a couple of Munich hotel posters. However, the centrepiece of the project is the treasure chamber of Munich brewery advertising.

At the far end of the museum you will find a shop with all kinds of original advertising material – no reproductions!

Collection

In his extensive private collection Michael Josef Nagl concentrates on a variety of topics. It includes a fascinating archaive with Munich brewery publicity very likely second to none. Furthermore, it contains a comprehensive build-up of posters and signs depicting birds’ eyes views of production sites, fine glass-signs and – last but not least – a really comprehensive choice of Guinness advertising.

Munich Bier Already in 1885 people in Paris could order Munich beer in their fine restaurants, and in 1893 there were four Munich breweries taking part in the Chicago Worldfair. Not slogans, but trademarks were put into the centre of attention.

Guinness is here for you Be it “Guinness is here for you”, “Guinness is good for you” or even “Guinnless isn’t good for you” – hardly any other brand can boast with such a fascinating adverting history.

Fittings and Shop Interior  Discoveries of old untouched shop furniture or backbars leave people speechless, isn’t that right?

Operator: Michael Josef Nagl

Munich native Michael Josef Nagl has occupied himself with old advertising since 1984. His passion started when he was employed as a German teacher in a community school at the east coast of Ireland. There he found old shops and pubs that had been unchanged for decades and were mostly run by very nice elderly men and women. There he discovered them, hanging on the walls, covered with cobwebbs: posters advertising Guinness’s Extra Stout, John Power`s Dublin Pot Still Whiskey oder Carroll´s Dundalk Tobacco Factory. He immediately was mesmerised and soon he used every free minute to find such forgotten places, some of which were so dark inside that it took a while to find one’s way around. All these impressions were summarized in a coffee table book in 1991 called OLD IRISH PUBS – The Real Ones.
